Otley Wharfeside V Thackley Sports 12-12-04.
Typical overcast December morning greeted the sports
to Otley, who had switched to a 3-5-2 formation for this important encounter. Thackley were quickly off to a brisk start when
Paul Clark seized on a dreadful dead ball kick by the Otley keeper to slot away the first goal on six minutes. The
rest of the first half was dominated by the Sports who piled on the pressure with numerous near misses and plenty of shots
on target, on another day the score could easily have been 5-0. Somehow it remained 1-0 at the interval.
From the start of the second half Thackley continued
to pressurise the Otley defence, on 50 minutes Andy Midgley took a corner right footed from the left hand side. The corner
was headed straight back out to him near the corner of the 18 yard box, and then hit an unstoppable curling shot into the
far top corner, a clear contender for goal of the season. Score 2-0. Otley then found their feet for a brief 5 minuet spell
managing to scramble home a goal against the run of play; however this resurgence was short lived as Otley proved no further
threat. The sports turned up the gas with Craig Lumley grabbing an excellent well earned brace to silence the Otley centre
backs to bring the score to 4-1. Minutes from the final whistle Andy Midgley Cryuff turned his man in the centre circle &
clipped an excellent pass over the top for Paul Clarke to race onto and claim his second of the game to make the final
An excellent team performance with every member giving 100%, and proves we
can now adapt to different formations when needed.
