Thackley Sports F.C V Wheatley                                14 Nov 04

Team:Harrison,Holtom,Nurthen,Maude,Rhodes,Wilde,Lumley,Castell,Chell,

Dunn,Clarke.Subs:Vozniak,Robinson.

On a chilly November morning the Sports, playing downhill put Wheatley under early pressure, Paul Chell twice dummying before crossing to Craig Lumley who had his accurate shot blocked. Immediately after, Mak Nurthen fired a blistering kick from almost the halfway line, which only just past the upright.

The very poor, muddy ground conditions were always going to hamper technical and skilful play. Several penalty appeals fell on deaf ears as fouls and slips were hard to differentiate in these conditions.

In the 20th minute, following yet another goal mouth scramble, Darren Castell finally slotted the ball home. Thackley 1-0 in front.

Wheatley won a rare corner which was quickly cleared, on the break Lumley crossed to Daniel Wilde, haring down the left side, who duly fired from the edge of the box, the ball ricocheting off Paul Clarke into the back of the net on the 37th minute. The onslaught continued with efforts going over and around Wheatleys woodwork.

Half time – Thackley  2 Wheatley 0

2nd half more Sports pressure, then, against play, Wheatley had a ten minute spell but never really threatened. Soon again the Sports were on the offensive as Paul Chell, in the style of a pit bull chasing a piece of fillet steak, hammered just to the left of the post. Seconds later a Paul Clarke break resulted in a cross glancing across the goal. The onslaught continued with a Mickey Dunn shot finding the back of the onion bag in the 70th minute.

5 mins from time, against the run of play, Wheatley forced a consolation goal from another rare corner.

A comfortable victory under arduous conditions, although as the old adage says “It is the same both sides”.

Man Of The Match – Daniel Wilde
